91-92 T-5's are among the best of that trans available, but it's still very weak.I think they're only rated at about 285 Ft/lb,while the earlier ones are only 250-265.I used to beat mine pretty good with a stock 305 TBI motor (second gear rubber daily), but at about 80K I had it rebuilt,as it no longer stayed in second gear. The rebuild kit for these trannies are expensive, and although a friend of mine (who works at a manual trans/rearend shop) rebuilt it for me,I think I'd have been better off buying a Tremec,Richmond or T56.Mine required 2 gears, a shift fork and an input shaft bearing retainer (actually, the third)and for about $500 more I could have had a better trans, although it would require other changes.I recently put a 300HP 350 and a posi,3.73,disc rear in mine, and am hoping the trans lasts through the winter, but I know that I'll have to replace it by spring. If you don't drive your car hard (banging gears and dumping the clutch) it will work, but keep in mind that even a stock 170HP 305 is capable of breaking it.

Oh, by the way,if you are going to use a T5, be sure and run synthetic fluid in it.It's worth the little xtra $.

DONT BOTHER... putting in a T-5 is just as much work as putting in a T-56 and the price tag is very similar.

The T56 is strong, the T5 isnt.

The T56 has six gears, the T5 has five.

All of these elements add up to say.... forget the T5 and go T56 if a manual swwap is what your looking for.

that is assuming that he is going to buy a brand new one. I am currently considering a swap to t5 but no way am I buying a brand new one. I am looking for an entire donor car to take the stuff out of.

Ok, so that's a definite no then...
Ok, well i guess i'll just pay the 600 for the t56 instead of 450 for the t5, then i gotta get the x-member though, oh well, it's not going anywhere anyways...
THanks a lot.
