Hard isn't the word I'd use. It isn't hard; what it is is expensive. Where to get parts is easy; G-Force. Using their gears, mainshaft, and case you can built a T5 that will handle 600HP and 500 lbs/ft.

So here is my next question. What would be a good alternative to this then? I have heard of people doing a coversion on the t56 that basicly drops two gears and still maintains similar overall gearing of a five speed and can handle a sucker puch of power. Meaning that the four speed conversion gives the t56 some lengthy gears.

if your building up your engine you will need a better trans. you either have to spend like $2300 on g force or you can get the after market t-56 for about the same. most go and get a LT1 t56 and swap that in. i would say its still about $2000 for everything unless you get a really good deal on the trans.

It all depends on what you are looking for. Manual transmission strength just doesn't come cheap. You can build your T5 with superalloy gears and get it up to 350 lbs/ft., or you can go the G-Force route and you are looking at $1,100-$2,600 depending on what all you replace.
You can swap to a Tremec for around $2,500.
You can swap in a T56 for somehwere between $2,500 and $5,000 depending on exactly which parts you use/reuse. The LT1 T56 is a much better choice than the aftermarket one IMO. The only way I'd use the aftermarket T56 is is I already had a bunch of money tied up in a scattershield, flywheel, and clutch. Otherwise the hassel doesn't justify it.
