Please solve my confusion! 28 spline? 26 spline?

Ok, I have an 85 drum open rear with 3.42's in it. I want to pop in an SLP take off unit. The the take off unit have gears on it? If not, putting the 3.42's on it would be fine.

But now, would it pop into my current rear end? When people say "spline" what are they refering to? What years are what spline!

AHH, my head hurts! HELP ME!

The SLP takeoff will not have gears. Your existing 3.42s will go right on it.

The spine deal has to do with the axles, where they slide into the side gears, which are part of the carrier. Starting in 89 more or less, GM went from 26 spline axles to larger diameter 28 spline ones. The 26 spline ones will slide right into a 28 spline carrier and just sit there while the carrier spins, because their diameter is so much smaller that the splines won't even touch.

So if you upgrade to the SLP unit you will need to find some 28 spline axles from a 90-92 f-body or you can buy some better 28 spline aftermarket ones from companies like www.drivetraindirect.com for $125 each
