2nd Gen rear-end for 3rd Gen

I was wondering what the differences were (other than the obvious mounting differ) of the gen2 10 bolt 8.5" to the gen3 10 bolt 7 5/8. I read the 'how to' about the gen4 on the site and found they're 2 inches wider. I wanted to create a Hybrid rear-end to fit the gen3, so I won't have to worry about the 7 5/8 self dustructing. I'm sure someone has done this, so experiences good/bad are welcome. Also, I heard that the gen3 axle tubes are thinner...Thanks Art.

I have both a 7-5/8 and an 8.5'' sitting in my basement now. I was planning on cutting teh backets off the one and rewelding them to the 8.5''. The biggest problem, as I thik Vader pointed out, would be the torque arm mount. As far as dimensions go, I really don't know.

i think with wise they might be close, but the 8.5 2nd gen is a leif spring and the 3rd a 4 link, everthing would need to be welded up perfect or the car will drive wrong and the suspention bind. i wouldnt even attempt this, its a serious PITA and would be better to just get a eaton posi and some moser axles and be done with it. no worrys and it will hold up.

Dude, this thread is a full 21 years old, and the original poster, "arthur", hasn't logged in here since 2002, do you actually expect he's gonna answer?

Instead of bumping threads so old the worms have come & gone and left nothing but Mold, perhaps search out threads where someone has actually completed this swap?
