Hey all I am having a problem . My 10 bolt is going bad. I was told that it has lots of slop in it. Is there any place out there that makes a good bolt in that is also good for the old budget.....

I went to the junk yard and pulled the rear out of a 1986 Firebird SE with a 2.8 and a 5 speed. The rear had 3.42 gears and it was a posi with 26 spline axles. I brought it home, welded the axle tubes, threw in an auburn posi and a spare set of 28 spline axles, TA performance housing with stud girdles, painted the thing up. There are 11 second cars out there with the 7-5/8'', so I think your car will live. Do the work yourself!

yeah,I agree, used rears are all over the place for a reasonable amount$.I got one from an 89 IROC for $50,bought new Ring & Pinion, rebuild kit (bearings, seals, shims, solid spacer(instead of crush sleeve)and rear support cover)welded the tubes, rebuilt the calipers and now I have 3.73 Posi, disc rear in place of my 3.08,non-posi,drum brake rear, for less than $700.
If you find one in reasonable condition and don't want to change gears, you could do it for a lot less.

. any gm dealer should be able to do it with no problem as could a lot of independent shops. buying a complete rear end from a junk yard is a good idea and should be cheaper than a repair if you do the swap your self.------------------

Define "slop". If may just need a set of bearings. A new set of bearings is the first thing I would do with a used rear. I've some ASE mech's say a GM rear has 'slop' when axles have a bit of in and out play--normal on a c-clip rear. If it's not making any noises, I would get a second opinion. Actually even if it is making some noise I would still get a another opinion. How would you know if a junk-yard rear is any better than what you already have?

Well its making more noise than you can imagine. I think the ring and pinion has eaten itself pretty bad. I really don't know. I think I am going to purchase a 10 bolt out of our classifieds from a fellow who already added a auburn posi.
Thanks all
