72 Olds Cutlass Convertible - transmission options
72 Olds Cutlass Convertible - transmission options
First off, thanks for taking a look at this post. I don't know a ton about cars except for starting them up and driving them (well I know a little bit more than that)
My 72 Olds transmission started slipping last year. Now it will only go forward and not in reverse. My first question is, should I get it rebuilt by the local shop (they seem to be suggesting a rebuild kit and labor will do the trick), or should I spring for a "new" rebuilt one from OPGI or a similar outfit and have it put in? Any guidance on how much these options with cost me would be helpful also (OPGI lists the rebuilt TH350 and TH400 for about $850 and $1100 respectively)
Now for the dumb question...what is the easiest way for me, an investment professional, to determine which transmission I have in this car? Can it be determined by getting under the car and looking for something in particular?
thanks in advance for any help with this

Re: 72 Olds Cutlass Convertible - transmission options
i have a70 convertible myself and have done plenty of research iv never seen a standard (not special order) cutlass have anything but a 350 turbo -assuming it is a 350 rocket- i put a 400 in mine for a while but found that all i got was a loss of speed due to all of the extra weight of the 400 someday i will just put a good old 700 r4 in it mine right now gets about 12 mpg i think that extra gear would really help ps if you have an automotive knowledge you could easily put a soft kit in it yourself( just the clutches ) its really when your messing with the valve body that you need the training .

it is a 350 Rocket and thanks for the response. I am hoping these guys down the street (who have been recommended by more than a couple of people) will treat me fairly...that's all I ask cuz people don't work for free, me included!
