disk brake conversion

O.K. i have a borg-werner 327 posi but dont have rear disk brakes,i found a rearend with the disk brakes for $150.00.It's out of an '88 GTA but how hard is it going to be to put these on my rearend,is it worth the $150. just for the brakes? Now if this rearend has 373 gears then what is the best way to check it for damage.I may swap the entire thing.anybody?

you cant just swap over the brakes, you have to swap the entire axle, you will also need its brake booster, master cylinder, parking brake cables and proportioning valve, i did it on my 80' and its a MAJOR pain in the a$$ to swap everything over but im happy with the improved braking.

Actually, he may not need to swap m/c's. Apeiron (I think) dug up an old service bulletin of GM's. It seems that some F-body owners (with rear discs, 82-88) complained that their brake pedals were too hard to push. (Aww, poor little things!) GM said that the dealer could pull the 4-wheel-disc master cylinder (RPO J65), and install a disc/drum master cylinder (J50). They said the J65 m/c was produced specially to give the driver increased pedal feel.

So right from GM's mouth, there will be no troubles using a disc/drum master cylinder on a 4-wheel-disk car. But I'd still get the correct prop valve! GM still sells them "new" for about $80.

One more "trick": 82-88 rear discs were recalled.. the parking brakes stopped working. GM sells the service bulletin parts. Search the suspension/chassis board for more info!

If you want disc brakes i would look into getting a 91-92 setup. I am in the process of fitting the late model setup to my 89 axle.

thanks for your responce, dosn't seem like it would be to much trouble,i would be getting the axles with the rearend so that leaves the preportioning valve, and the finding the emerg.brake cables,,Sounds like a good winter project.

Is the other rear a 10 bolt or a 9 bolt? the axles will not interchange between the 2. What calipers are on teh disc rear end? if the rears are different then you will need the correct backing plates. You do not have to switch the axles just the backing plates. the backing plates are not interchangeable and the pbr caliper and 11.65 rear rotor came out in 89.
