350 or 700r4 need everyones opinion

i have a 88 v6 camaro. i am going to convert to a healthy 350 or 383 (my build can go either way) trying for around 400 horses. kind of a play toy but will be driven on a regular basis (put it to you this way i am keeping the ac). might even see a little track time. i am old school roder i knoe turbo 350's and 400's, but i dont know 700r4s. exept i no they were crap in the old trucks and suburbans.///////what is my best bet for a trans?//// i will take all pros and cons for my decision.

WHAT TRANS SHOULD I USE?

A 700r4 can handle about 375-400hp. Thats a bone stock one. If u were to build it up with things such as Borg Warner Hi-Energy clutches, and Corvette servos one could handle around 550hp.

id prefer a 700r4 other any other trans except a t56: With you can maintain your horsepower and plus you have overdrive. I would use a 700r4 unless youre going for a high horsepower build or anything with a turbo/supercharger i would use a turbo400.

Re: 350 or 700r4 need everyones opinion

Ive gone both ways I had 84' trans am with a zz4 and turbo 350, and I was pretty rough on it and never had a problem. If you live in town or are low on money the 350 is pretty solid, but if you can afford a new hi-po 700 thats the way to go. another thing to remeber the 350 is a dog out of the hole unless you have low gears.

i should tell more about the car. its going to be a carb motor. probably go with 3.42 or 3.73 gears on the stock rearend, beefed up of coarse. with a stall conv. dont know what stall yet. can you put a shift kit for firmer shifts in a 700r4. i could make a 350 chirp every gear. do i need to get a certain year 700r4 to run on a carb motor?

Re: 350 or 700r4 need everyones opinion

it all depends on what you want
for an intown mostly track car turbo 350 all the way cheap and easy. however no over drive

however like me who usually drives to the track all highway and lives in the country i like having that 700r4 allows me to go down the highway at 2000rpm with 3.73 not to mention that 3 to 1 first gear.

im running a stock unit right now with 450 horses it shifts fine cruising but at wot no chance of catching 2nd gear. but like i said i enjoy the highway gear so i plan on spending the money to beef it up this winter
