do I have posi or limited slip?
when i had the passenger side up in the air, i noticed the i could not turn the rear wheel with the other on the ground while in neutral. the car came with limited slip 10 bolt with drum brakes from factory. somebody told me that it is a true posi because the tire would not turn with the other still on the ground. so do i have a limited slip or a posi? thanks for your help.

Yes.
That's exactly what you have: limited slip or positive traction. They're 2 different brand names for the same thing: a set of clutches that connect the 2 axles, such that some minimum amount of torque (50 ft-lbs or so typically) is required to make them turn at different speeds.

What he said...No such thing as 'true' posi. Posi is simply GM's name for limited slip. It stands for Positive traction--back in the old days.

I think what your friend may have been referring to by saying 'true' posi is either a locking diff. or a spool.
I had a '74 Camaro with a mini spool in it. You don't want that.
It's a wonder how I didn't break something. I didn't know it was a spool (I bought the car that way) until I had a speedo gear put into the tranny. The guy that put it in said that the old one was stripped out from accelerating around corners with that mini spool in there.
I don't know how that could've happened, but he's the pro.

its the factory rear end but was messed with by a hick before i bought the car. so i think it has that aftermarket "spool" so it has "true posi". how do i remove the "spool" so it is normal?

One sure way to tell (but not the safest, so be careful) is to
(1) Stop the car completely.
(2) Crank the wheel to the right all the way.
(3) Nail the throttle like you've never hit it before in your life.
I don't care how good a posi you have, the right rear wheel (say that 10 times fast
) should go up in smoke. If it's a spool, then the a-s-s end of that car will swing around like a kid on a merry-go-round.But like I said Be careful!!! As soon as that tire starts smokin' let off the gas. Otherwise you'll burn up the clutches in the posi unit.
And if the a-s-s end tries to catch a glimpse of the front headlights, then have fun!!!!!!! Just don't get dizzy enough to puke in your car!!!!!

Well, like RB83L69 said, it takes a lot to get that posi to open up for differential operation. I don't think that you can just twist it by hand and get it to release.

I just recently swapped my stock 2.77 posi 9-bolt for a 3.27 posi 9-bolt out of a 89 bird. With my 2.77's when I did what you said both tires would go up in smoke and the car would swing around like crazy (I was the donut king). Now when I do it only the right wheel spins as if I had a 1-legger. Whats up with that?

As the posi unit wears, it will take less to get it to 'open'. Since the posi that you put in has 3.27 gears, it probably spent more time doing it's job.
Does it spin both tires off a dead stop?

well i turned my wheel like you said and only one wheel spun for a couple seconds and then the other a started to spin. so that clears up the whole thing about it being totaly rigged by the previous owner. so is it normal for both wheels to have to be in the air for them to spin?

Actually, that's another way for anyone to check. If both tires are in the air, and the trans is in neutral, then an open rear end will cause the other wheel to spin the opposite way. A posi/limited slip/lock up/spool will cause both wheels to spin the same direction.

Well since a few days ago the new rear started making this weird undescribable sound. Its kind of like a metal sliding against metal noise. It gets posi around corners (80% of the time) and off the line but sometimes it'll take a second for the other wheel to kick in.
Looks like I'll be putting another rear in soon.
whoa!? WTF...I have a 9 bolt 5spd(That means i have 3.45s(woohooo) and while my car was getting the engine transplant i was fing with the rear and the opposite whell spun the opposite way. Now I was in front of my Friends house and did a burn out and I have two very dark and distictive marks from that run meaning that both "locked up" and powered away. Go figure. But right now i am trying to fix damage from a deer collition and then put the LB9 heads and an LT1 cam in the 305 engine which was a TBI truck 305.
