700R4 problems
700R4 problems
I've got a 700R4 with a B&M shift kit. I installed it for the hardest possible shifts it could give me. I adjusted the TV cable with a gage like the instructions said to. It's got a horrible idle in gear. I've got a 270* cam in the motor ( a 350), and in gear it idles at about 550 or 600. It pulls VERY hard, and after the tranny gets hot, it'll stall the car. I hooked the gage back up to make sure the TV cable is adjusted right, and whenever I pull the cable out to take that reading, the pressure never goes back down. It stays at 150 - 160 psi until I cut the car off and let it sit for a few seconds. This tranny is old. I don't know exactly how old, as the odometer doesn't work, but the engine was worn out, and everything about the car looks like it has a lot of miles on it. If this tranny is a lost cause or if it needs internal work, I'll just put in a TH350. I won't miss the OD too much because I think I have 2.73 gears.

Mods include a 4bolt 350 with 280*, .460 lift cam, Vortec heads, Comp Cams roller tip rockers, Edelbrock TES headers, no other exhaust
. Also, rusted parts on all 4 corners, and crumpled fenders, thanks to the previous owner.

Unfortunately the B&M NON-shift kit does NOT fix that. You get what you ask for and you got B&M. Perhaps it is not too late to switch to the TransGo kit?

I know Transgo is better than B&M, but I didn't have the dough for the better kit. I promise not to do it again, but I need a little advise. How hard is it to fix the TV mechanism on the valvebody? I've got a new Tv cable on it, so I don't think that's it. Like I said earlier, the tranny probably has a lot of miles (over 100-150K at least) on it. If it's more trouble than it's worth, I'm going to put in a TH350.
So... What's my best bet on this one, Leo? You seem to know something about trannies.

That's the rub. You may or may not fix it. Some tranny shops will have a small spring that goes on the TV Valve, if it seems too light you can double it. This is NOT the same as the TransGo setup but maybe it will work for a while.
