I have a 87 GTA with the 350 tpi A4. This weekend i was driving on the interstate at 80 or so then all of a sudden I lost 4th. just like i down shifted to third. I pulled over and checked the fluid DARK BROWN to black. I then drove it again about 1/4 mile to actually get off the interstate and then it wouldn't even move, just like i put it in netrual. i then had it towed about 100 miles and started it up to move it up a hill and it moved like normal. Do I actually need a rebuild or what?

forsure, it's probley needed a reabuild for the past couple years a bet, normally its cherry red, then will start to go orange when its starting to go, then yellow, then black when its just everything inside is BBQ'ed (i bet you never changed the fluid eather did you forsure rebuilt time.

 

I have changed it at 68055 miles because that is whe I first got it running.The fluid was red to dark red when I changed it. It now has 74217 on the odometer. I used valvoline dex/merc III. Also reverse sounds like there is a noticable whine, NOT NORMAL quite loud since this.

Is there a possibility that there could be a gear problem in the trans that would make reverse exceptionally loud?

Sure but a whine usually is from a restricted filter and in Reverse there is more demand for oil than in the Drive ranges. Try it in Man1 and see if it also whines. Demand is higher in Man1 then in other Drive ranges.
