Shift up light?!

Hey everyone,
I own a completely stock '87 Firebird with a 305, auto 700R4. This past summer the Shift up light (I don't even understand why it is equipped) comes on whenever my car shifts into overdrive and you are staying at or close to one speed, it goes off as soon as you accelerate from that speed. I was hoping that maybe you guys could give me some advice on this matter.
Thanks to everyone

Was your eprom ever changed? In the standard eproms from GM (and most aftermarket), the shift light code is bypassed if you have an automatic.

Have you checked that you aren't getting an SES code?

No I have never changed my eprom, at least not since I have owned the car and the light just started coming on this past summet. I have thought about checking for a code but haven't yet, maybe I will try that. Thanks

Re: Shift up light?!

Ok, Out total and compete frustration with my 86 trans-am, not being able to find a transmission, having all the steering column issues and needing a car to drive NOW, I went to the extreem and just went out and bought another F-body. This one is an 88 Firebird. While driving home I also have the shift up light, but its an automatic transmission, so I was wondering why its even there. After reading this thread I guess its not that uncommon so now the question is why is it comming on and how do I stop it?

Re: Shift up light?!

Automatic cars came from the factory WITHOUT a bulb installed in that spot. If you do install a bulb, it will light when the car locks the torque convertor.

you just need to take out the bulb, although I don't see why it is such a big deal. Might be nice to know when the TC is locked.
