T56 Pressure Plate Bolts - Solution Here!
Hey Guys,
I've been pouring through the forums looking for the right pressure plate bolts for an LT1 based T56. If you're in the same boat, you've probably found that the GM part number has been discontinued and ARP doesn't have a direct replacement (although Summit and Jegs says different). The other concern I've heard voiced many times is that a grade 8 bolt from the local hardware store isn't adequate. Well, my solution ended up coming from Fastenal:
Part No. 20677 HCS 3/8-16 X 2 YZ9 $1.03 ea.
These are grade 9 bolts with a yield strength rating of 180,000 psi. You'll note they're about 1/2" longer than stock but the additional threads easily fit within the flywheel without protruding out the back. I now have the clutch installed and getting ready to bolt up the transmission. Hope this helps...

I just went to the local auto parts store and picked up a set of Mr. Gasket flywheel bolts. Worked just fine for me...

I believe that these were actual GM factory bolts and that if you try to order them you'll find they're unavailable. They were expensive anyway...

Hmm, you used flywheel bolts in place of pressure plate bolts? You have the part number you used?

They may be unavailable from GM but Mcleod has reproduced them from the factory GM print. Mcleod has them in stock ready to ship.

Jegs is marking those bolts up 17% over and above Mcleod full MSRP price. You could buy those bolts direct from Mcleod for full pop $44.64. I think it's time to look at another dealer. Joined: Nov 2005

I assume they are different from a 87+ 1 piece SBC pressure plate bolts? Because I got these off the shelf at my local parts store, I recall them being around $10 for the set.

What do you mean in place of? You have to use new bolts because the bolts from the pressure plate are too short. The bolts I used were just generic flywheel bolts for a SBC. I can try to get a part number at some point though if you really need it. Cost me less than $20. I think it was actually less than $15 to be honest.

I was asking if you actually used flywheel bolts for the pressure plate and it sounds like you did. I don't remember now but I believe they're threaded the entire length of the bolt, aren't they? Speaking for myself, I was looking for a solution that wasn't threaded the entire length and was as close to the original PP bolt as possible. It may not be a big deal and I hope that works out great for you.

On my car I used the stock bolts that came with the transmission. I was told they are almost impossible to find so I made damn sure I didn't lose them.
