rpm's fall while driving, like it was put in nuetral

Ok, when I'm driving in second and let off the gas, the rpm's drop to like 1000 (from about 2-2500) like I just put it in nuetral. THen when I press the gas again, the engine has to rev back up to like 2500 again before the car will accelerate.
Any ideas?

Thanks

Is this while driving in manual second or when in overdrive range, second gear? I assume second range. Sounds like a problem w/ the overrun clutches. Could be burnt or stripped.

This happens when I'm in second manually (shifter at 2), I haven't noticed it happening when I'm in drive.

Thats cause when you let off, it shifts into 3rd. You should have engine braking in manual 2nd (manual 1st and 3rd also for that matter). This engine braking is via the overrun clutches applying forcing the foward sprag to lock up in both directions.
Could have broken the hub that the clutches spline to also.

It shouldn't be shifting into third though, (transgo shift kit), but it doesn't act like its in gear anyway, even if it shifted into third when i press the gas it should react but it doesn't, the engine just revs back up to where it should be and then you can feel it engage again and the car will move.
You used to be able to feel the engine breaking while driving in 2nd ~ 25-30 mph with foot off the gas, but now it doesn't do it anymore when the rpms drop.

But it sounds like the problem may be over my head anyway. Thanks for the suggestions.

In manual second, your right, it shouldn't. I was refering to why I assumed this was happening in manual second vs. overdrive. Had you been in overdrive, it would have shifted into third.

You say it won't do it in Drive (manual 3rd)?

Did you find anything burnt up? Its possible you had a "rolled" overrun clutch piston seal, although I never seen that one rolled before and teh new seals and clutches cured it. Odd.

They drop some in D, but if I press the gas you can feel it start to accelerate so I don't think its a problem in D.

Although I had hardly any friction material left on the clutches and the steel was showing through on mostly all of them. My Teacher couldn't beleve that it still moved. I rebuilt it because of had extra time in class and it drove fine no problems.

All of your problems are in the overrun clutch & overrun sprag area. No matter which is has to come out for it to be fixed. Make sure that whoever does the work that the overrun sprag is updated with the latest from Borg-Warner. As long as it down this far you might consider the Trans-Go Performance Shift kit and updating the 3-4 clutch pack from six to eight Borg-Warner 3-4 Hi-Energy clutches along with a 2-4 BW Hi-E band with a Corvette servo & boost valves. Now you will have a very reliable perrformance unit. If I can be of help let me know as I carry everything for the 7004R.
Hope This Helps!!!

Yeah, what he said. I buy all my "performance" tranny parts from probuilt. Call him up and he will square you away w/ all that you need.
