I can't get my car to stay in reverse. I know I need synchrose, but do I need a new countershaft?

If its just a rebuild kit where can I get one?

Reverse has no synchro. Even if it was one of the forward gears (which do all have synchros) replacing them wouldn't fix that if they were doing it.

Rebuild kits also won't fix that. Sounds to me like somebody has been shifting it into reverse without putting it into a forward gear first, thereby grinding reverse for several seconds every time; and they've done it so many times for so long, that they have trashed the reverse gears. You probably need all 3 reverse gears. They will cost over $100 apiece; don't get them new, get a junk trans, and get the gears out of it.

You might want to check out www.gearzone.net for some 5-speed info, including a video on how to disassemble and reassemble it. Of course, you will need a rebuild kit to go along with the used hard parts, which the above mentioned place has available.
