hey guys i need to replace the pinion seal in my 92 rs it has is 9 bolt with disk brake 3.23 gear parts stores want the axel code to look it up anyone know?or what size the ring gear is?

 

Pinion seal is CR 16545.

 

is that a part # what size is the rear ? 7.62or 7.5

 

That's a part number, won't make a difference if the ring gear is 7.5 or 7.625. They both use the same pinion seal. Any parts store should be able to cross that number to something they carry.

That seal part number is for a 9 bolt. How did your '92 get a 9 bolt in it? Those were discontinued in '90. They also didn't have a 3.23 gear, they had a 3.27 gear. Better check again and see if you have a 9 bolt or a 10 bolt. If it's the 10 bolt then it will be the 7.6.

 

the rear came from a 89 firebird gta the tag does say 3.23 slip resistant buddy of mine has the same rear in his 89 iroc and his tags say the same oh yeh i put it in there.just dident do pinion seal when i put it in and of course now its leaking lol they both are disk brake rears

 

Technically, 3.23 is in fact a 10 bolt ratio. 3.27 is the correct ratio if it's a 9 bolt. If it came out of an 89 GTA, chances are it's probably the 9 bolt. Of course it's really easy to tell by counting the bolts on the rear cover, and the 9 bolt also has a rubber fill plug in the back cover, and the shape of the cover itself sorta resembles a stop sign. Make damn sure to put a scribe mark on the pinion nut and the pinion threads before undoing the pinion nut. I also count how many threads are protruding past the nut. You want to tighten the nut back to exactly where it was before you removed the nut, otherwise your pinion bearing preload will be set all wrong. Since you'll probably be re-using the original pinion nut, it's also a good idea to put some red loctite on the pinion threads before re-installing the nut. This will help prevent the nut from loosening up and backing off. Also make sure to smear a little dab of gear lube on the rubber lip of the new seal. This will prevent the new seal from getting a friction burn from being installed dry.

 

i know its a 9 bolt i just put the rear in last week end.my ? is what size ring gear is it ?is it a 7.5? or a 7.625 when i took it out of the car 6 years ago i did all kinds of research on it and know its an odd size.but now i cant find any of it so if some one can just refresh my noggin it would be helpfull

 

Neither one, it's a 7.75. Those other two are 10 bolt rear ends.

 

Yeah, it's usually referred to as 7.75" by most parts places.
