Part number for speedo gear housing for 85 T5?
I'm swapping a 91 T5 into my 85 IROC, so I need the speedo gear housing to replace the VSS that's in the T5 right now. My local GM parts guy is a tool and without an actual part number, I stand a good chance of getting the wrong part. Does anybody have the part number for the speedo gear housing for an 85 V8 5 speed car? Thanks.

Here's the response my dad got from the parts guy when he called:

It is called vehicle speed sensor. It is also multiple choice. He needs to
know the color of the driven gear. Your choices are, blue, green or purple.
Why didn't you know that?

I bought one of those a couple of years ago, and threw out the receipt like an idiot about last August in a severe fit of housekeeping, that I haven't fully recovered from yet.
I can tell you for certain it doesn't make the slightest difference what gear you put in it, they're all the same. Also, you won't believe the difference when you get it; it's machined steel! It makes the OE chinesium piece of dung look like a toy by comparison.

Does that mean that yours wasn't a GM piece? Where did you get it? This is starting to sound nice.

Well, if your Camaro is an 85, then you are looking for the gear driven deal, NOT a VSS. I am having the opposite problem. I need a VSS for mine, because I have an electronic speedo now.
I have the part you need, if you can find me a VSS for a T5.

He's right. Your 85 came with a mechanical vehicle speed sensor (also called cable driven speedo). What color gear depends on what rear end gears you have now. The drive and driven gears have to match with what your rear end gears are. I know for a 3.42 rear it you want a 7 tooth purple drive gear and a 19 tooth white driven gear. Other combinations you can do a search.
It looks like you and XFire83 can swap VSS's and both of you are happy. You need a mechanical speedo and have an electronic one, and vice versa for him.

Thanks for the replys guys. I knew that the piece I needed was not the "VSS" that the dealer was trying to sell me. On the mechanical speedo cars, the VSS is on the back side of the speedo. Anyway, a guy already mailed me the piece i needed. I swapped the driven gear with the one on the stock VSS, and as soon as I rember to bring it to work, I'll be shipping the VSS off to him.
