I just pulled off the tranny to replace the rear main seal and put everything back on.. but, the torque converter will not go back on the transmission. ive tried for hours but it just wont go on. any suggestions? btw. its an 84 T/A with a 355 and a TH400. both have no miles

 

Never heard of that problem unless you burred the splines up on trans shaft let me know what you find.

 

SO..... yesterday i went and got a torque converter that my friend had and it went right on..? Everyone i talked to (that have worked on cars longer than ive been alive) said that theyve never seen anything like it..... and the odd thing is that the torque converter that wouldnt go on, came off of the transmission three days before..

 

if anyone knows more about this please post.

 

its possible it wasnt lined up correctly?

 

There are 3 alignment stages when installing a converter. It takes patience to get it on. Sometimes everything is perfect and they slip right on. If tolerances are tight, it usually takes a bit more time and luck. There is no "easy way" to install a converter.

 

yea... i was told that. and had those people come over to try it out and they were astounded at what was going on... as i said i got a different one and it fit in within a min. the one that i have laying round i spent around 6 hours trying to get it on. but it just wont...

 

Reckon you could roll by the shop that built it and see what they think?

 

i eventually just went and got another one and it slipped right on.. the one that came off is still an astonishment to everyone.. not a single guy i talk to knows why it is that way.. three guys came over and tried. one- Stock car racer and mechanic for 32 years. another- mechanic for 25 years, and the other- private mechanic (worked on cars by himself) for 42 years... and not one single clue. the splines were fine and not bent or even scratched. again, if anyone knows what it could be please post..

 

Maybe it was balloning and you just caught it in time?

I know when they do that it will F up the trans when not found out till to late.

But never seen one apart.
