Energy Suspension SUCKs?
Energy Suspension SUCKs?
ok, i just installed a new energy suspension tranny mount #3.1108, and well im having some problems, i left out the shim thingy like everyone said i should, and i had ALOT of trouble getting the mount in, took me about 3 hours. i had to end up getting a pry bar against the side of the tranny to move it over to get the bolts on the crossmember to go it. well i finaly got it all bolted up, then the trouble started.
I started driving, and i noticed a little more vibration then usual, and i wasnt to concerned, as it wasn't that much, but still annoying because it rattled the window. But then i got on the highway and was going about 3/4 throttle, and above about 3500 RPMS the shifter tranny area was vibrating like crazy, i could hear the plastic rattling, and i noticed that my 1-2 shifts, which with the old mount before it went out, were firm, and would chirp the tires and that was that. but now my 1-2 shifts chirp but not without vibrating.
why am i STILL having vibration?? if energy suspension is SO GOOD then why did i have less tranny movement with my stock rubber mounts? id rather change a tranny mount every month then go through this crap with this ****ty mount, what gives???
is there any brands out there that don't suck?

Ummmmmm, not exactly sure what you did wrong installing your new mount, but ever since I installed the Energy Suspension mount in mine, the only difference is I don't have to worry about it coming apart anymore. I broke the stock mount in my car with a 305 TBI motor and 2.73 gears if that gives you any idea how weak they are. It might be possible that you need to loosen up the four outer crossmember bolts and slide the crossmember itself around a little. This might be causing an unusual bind. This only allows a little bit of adjustment, but it might be enough to eliminate the problem. Not loosening those bolts a little is more than likely the reason you had to fight the tranny with a prybar to get the bolts to go in. When I installed mine, it only took about 20 minutes. Also, I can't remember for sure if there's a difference either way, but you might need to undo the mount and flip it around 180 degrees.

ok, i think mine must be on wrong or something, either that or everything is out of alignment,
now maybe this is my problem, when i changed the tranny mount, i only jacked up one side of the car, with one jack under the passenger side frame rail, and the jack under the tranny, but when i was putting it back on, the tranny was shifted to the drivers side, and i had to pry the tranny towards the passenger side to get the bolts on the crossmember to bolt up. could that be whats causing it? should i jack up both sides evenly and loosen and retighten everything

Maybe installing it without that "shim" was your problem. That "shim" is designed to pre-load the mount and it seems pretty stupid to install it without it to me. After destroying the mount on my 2.8 (yes, I destroyed a trans mount with the mighty 2.8
) I decided that poly was the only way to go on the IROC. The tranny isn't in the car yet, but it mounted fine onto the trans and crossmember. I did have to make the slot on the crossmember a tad larger for the bolt supplied with the mount to fit through, but otherwise the install was a no-brainer.

just put one on my 91' Camaro and I also heard a lot of people commenting on the pre-load plate but I went ahead and installed it anyways and have had no problems. Of course vibrations will be amplified dued to the stiffer poly material used but what your describing sounds like too much. Try putting the pre-load plate in and see if this solves your problem.

Could be your new mount is telling you something about the rest of your engine. Your engine might have been slightly off balance, but just enough for the rubber mount to make it unnoticeable. Once you went with poly, you amplified an existing problem. Any engine overhaul work done? If not, maybe it's time.
Of course, try the simple fixes first. Make sure the mount isn't backwards; the rounded end points to the back of the vehicle. Also, I used the metal preload shim, and I also don't know why so many people complained about it; it worked fine for me.
As for installing it, make sure you get the bolt into the mount through the crossmember first, then tighten the 4 bolts to the chassis. This will save you a lot of cursing. If you have to, remember that the mount can be loosened on the tranny, then slid left or right a bit, then try it again. My crossmember required widening the hole for the middle bolt, but I'm not sure all crossmembers require this. Hope this helps.

well i guess ill be under the car again in a few days, i think BigRuss had something when he said the MOUNT itself was adjustable, not just the crossmember, i think that had alot to do with it. thanks alot guys!

I do notice a few more vibrations than before, but nothing that can't be tolerated. Plus, even if the vibrations were annoying, I broke two rubber mounts in as many days, so this is by FAR less annoying.
Another solution, but a much more expensive one, is to go with a Spohn torque arm. This little beauty mounts to it's own crossmember, not the transmission, thereby keeping all that rear axle torque off the tranny mount; that's what usually breaks the rubber mount. They cost about $355. You can find them at:
http://www.spohn.net
Like I said, this is the luxury solution. If I were you, I'd check everything else first. Also check the tires to make sure they're balanced and you're not getting a vibration from there. Your driveshaft could also be off balance, causing the vibes. All of these things might have gone unnoticed with a rubber mount.

Hey Breathment,
My ES poly mount has caused a massive vibration too. I used the plate and it was installed on a lift with no apparent binding anywhere. I've driven it a few hundred miles and it has gotten a little better but its still too much to drive 50 miles every day like I have to. At 80mph it feels like the damn car is going to come apart! It was as smooth as glass before. Maybe there is something wrong with another part of the car (driveshaft, engine, clutch, ?).
Sure is a PITA when you think you will be solving a big problem and you only create another one, isn't it!
