How much horsepower will a TH350 hold?

How much horsepower will a TH350 hold?

I have a stock th350 with a b&m shift kit and is in great shape but i am wondering if i should build it up for my engine. What do you guys think?

Mine is still surviving. The weak link is the intermediate sprag (overrunning clutch). It stops the direct drum when shifting from 1-2. It can explode and take out a few parts inside the tranny. Even a stock engine can break the sprag is misused.

I'm upgrading to a TH400 just for a stronger transmission and a transbrake this winter.

Yeah, i have a turbo 400 that needs a part or two but i don't know if there would be any HP loss due to it being a heavier duty transmission, granted I would get a stronger tranny, but i would have to get another conversion kit and more than likely another driveshaft.

The TH400 takes about 15 more HP to turn plus weighs about 15 pounds more. A TH350 will let you run quicker but the TH400 is better built.

I built my TH350 a couple of years ago and just finished building the TH400 last week. I like the internal design of the TH400 much better.

The extra cost of having to buy another shifter. Canadian exchange rate sucks right now and I don't feel the car is light enough yet to really take the full advantage from a glide.

I have a TH350 in my 70 Nova,behind a 454.
It's manual-only,with 3000 Stall TC and the usual added clutches/steels.So far it's holding up very well,street driven and occasional drag race.About 550HP/500FT/LBs.
(Running hi-elevens)
I do plan on upgrading to a TH400 when it goes, though.

Stephen is right on the money...

If all you have is a small block, then the 350 is plenty even with stock internals. You have nothing to worry about except making sure it's built right.
