Possible Broken Shift Cable?

Hey so I've got an auto 1985 'maro and just last night I was visiting some friends, after I came out started the car shift to reverse but the car went to neutral. The actual shifter had a lot of play between park and overdrive. Like in drive the shifter was loose and moved around but didn't actually engage in the button (like N). It is only able to freely move up though, it seems from overdrive to third to 2nd.. etc it stays in place. IT's also only that reverse, neutral and park were hard to find. But I could still get into those gears it just took some shifting up and down. For example getting the car from the uni to my house i parked but where the park symbol was the car was still in reverse. I shifted around a couple times and finally got it into Park. It's also a heck of a lot easier to physically move the shifter now, obviously. Anyways that must've been long and confusing but Im just wondering what do you think is wrong?

Thank you so much.

Re: Possible Broken Shift Cable?

The plastic sleeve is probably broke and slipping in the casing at mount, look at the cable where it bolts to the lever and tranny
