gear noise

alright so i got my 9 inch in tonight and took it down the road. my rear end is making a lot of noise typical gear wine from when the pattern isnt right. problem is i know the pattern is correct. now my question is i used the old 4.11 detroit locker setup out of my dads drag car. could a new pattern on a set of gears cause it to wine like this. if so should i be considering new gears to solve it or will it be ok.

Re: gear noise

How was it set up? Did you use new bearings? How did you set the bearing preload? Did you check the pattern again before you put it in your car? Is this a street gear or a pro gear?

well were not exactly positive if its a street gear or pro gear. dad set it up and the pattern was good when we put it in. yes we used new bearings.

Re: gear noise

Just a guess but with that ratio, I would say they were cut as racing gears. So the way the gear teeth were made you are going to hear noise & wine. So you are have to learn to live with it or buy different gear set.

Re: gear noise

Pro gears wear quickly and can be noisy. They usually won't have a good pattern after they have been run for a while. How did you set the bearing preload?

Re: gear noise

alright so pinion bearing preload was set to 13-15 inch lbs. and the carrier bearings we set backlash and made a good pattern then tightened down with a punch cause we didnt have a wrench for it.

Re: gear noise

I guess you don't have any pictures of the pattern. That would help.
