Zoom Clutch Issue
I recently did the 700R4 to T-56 swap in my '91 Camaro. The clutch that I went with is the Zoom HP70043-1 unit that has the Kevlar lining on the clutch disc. I love the tranny, but I don't like all the clutch chatter I've been experiencing. The upshifts are fine under most conditions, but the downshifts and slow speed engagement are terrible. If you don't bring the engine RPM's up to at least 2,000-2,200 when moving from a dead stop, the clutch chatter simply shakes the whole car.
Does anyone else have any experience with this particular clutch? If so, were you seeing similar issues?
The engine in my car is a pretty mild 355. I'd guess it to be making in the neighborhood of 300hp, so I don't really need a racing clutch in the car. Does anyone have any experience with a stock LT1 clutch behind a mild small block like this? If the stock clutch can handle the power, I'd be pretty tempted to go that route.

Re: Zoom Clutch Issue
Something is wrong, but it's probably not the clutch disk. It could be a bad flywheel, bad bearing retainer, wrong clutch fork or bad pivot, bad pressure plate, even a bad thrust bearing in the engine. I've seen flywheel bolts with heads too thick hitting the clutch springs cause chatter. Did your bell housing have the alignment dowels? How do the engine and trans mounts look? Is everything new?

Re: Zoom Clutch Issue
i have the same clutch on my tko, so its the stock 10.5 deal, i think the t56 is larger? The only chatter i have is at really low speeds when i downshift, i think. But nothing that shakes the car, almost sounds like there is another issue. I love this clutch, it engages really smooth and hold very well.
