4l80e

Has anyone tried or put a 4l80e in their 3rd gen? What can I expect if I try and put one in? I know I will have to make trans mount different on crossmember. But as far as fitting next to floor pan, will I have any mods to do?
Thanks Dusty

Lots. It's a big heavy transmission.

As always, it's suggested that you use the search function to find other threads related to your question. It's not the first time it's been asked.

Re: 4l80e

search topradman's user profile. He had a long article with pictures about what he did to get one in his IROC. The 4L80 is a very heavy duty trans, from what I know it's the same guts as a TH400 just with adjustable line pressure

Re: 4l80e

My dad has one in a work truck that had just been rebuilt when the engine chunked a rod. If you are interested I can see what he would take for it. The truck is in Philadelphia Ms

Re: 4l80e

About 80% of the internal parts are the same however the electronic valve body makes the valve body much bigger. Add in the OD and the tranny becomes bigger.

Estimated weight of a complete 4L80E is around 250 pounds. A TH400 is only 130. My powerglide is around 95

Re: 4l80e

as a builder building the guts all the way up to the overdrive section is approximately the same as a th400. After that it changes a lot. In all I'd say approx. 60% is the same at best. Seen a lot of 4L80E's lately with no reverse engagement. sad . but fixable.

Re: 4l80e

Thanks for the replies I have also read its only 40lbs heavier than 700r, but I have all 3 and will put them on a scale then I will know. The reason I am interested is the heavy duty (withoverdrive) if weight is such a big deal I can always ditch someother part of the car.Just wanting one of the best long term strongest tranny to fit in a 3rd gen car.
