trans problem

hello all. new member here and i just bought my first f-body. well actually im going to pick it up saturday.

it's an '82 trans am with the lg4 with auto and im not sure what transmission is in it. the car runs and drives but i have a couple questions on the transmission.

the tranny has no second gear. when driving the car in order to get it into third gear you have to let off the gas and it goes into third with no problem and no slipping at all. the guy im buying it from said he took off the quadrajet and put an edelbrock carb on it. do the autos in the car have a vacuum modulator on them to cause this and it wasn't hooked up after switching carbs? he didn't say it started when he swapped carbs.

also if it does indeed need a rebuild im not afraid to try it cause i have all winter to get it done.

Re: trans problem

at this point, the original TH200C trans could be long gone. It's easy to replace it with a TH350. From the symptoms, it sounds to me more like it should have a 700R-4 swapped in, but those don't use vacuum modulators.

Re: trans problem

Back when I used to own a 2nd gen with a TH350, whenever the vacuum line to the modulator became disconnected, the motor would wind up to about 4-5,000 rpm and then shift with a damn hard bang. But it seems like I also remember that it'd shift if you let off the gas for a second. Either way, it's not hard at all to check and see if there's a vacuum line leaking or disconnected from the trans. Hopefully that's the problem since it's way cheaper and easier to fix versus having to rebuild the trans. Being an '82 there's a damn good chance it's vacuum modulated.
