84 Z28 axle question...

Hey gang...

I have an 84 Z28. Factory 305 H.O. car..now has 355ci. Has a factory 3.73 axle and posi...posi no longer seems to be working. What is the size of the axle that this car came with? Is it a 7.5" or 8.2" or 8.5"?

Thanks!

Ty

7.5 with 26-spline axles. You may wish to consider upgrading to an Eaton carrier and 28-spline axles. I don't believe the OE carrier (Auburn or Gov-lock) is rebuildable. The following FAQ may provide some food for thought:

You could have the Auburn or Governor Lock. If you have the Auburn then it's trash. The Auburn can not be rebuilt. Take it out and get a new Eaton. This is a MUCH better differential than the Auburn.

If you have the Governor Lock then you probably broke the gear on the end of the governor. The governor will have to be replaced. The last one that I bought was $75, and that was a few years ago. Replacing the governor requires a special tool. When I bought mine about 10 years ago it was $130. There is no telling what it cost now.

Thanks, big, I didn't think the Gov-loc was rebuildable--but the question is why would you want to!

It usually cost more to rebuild one that it's worth. A new Gov Lock is about $700, so if you have a stock GM truck with a damaged gear it can be worthwhile to repair it. But for a performance car it isn't worth it.
