T56 price question?

What do you figure a T56 to go for these days? Trans only.

Condition: Used and not drivable, but rebuildable?

I was thinking $600, but what do you guys think?

Re: T56 price question?

Has the trans been taken apart to know what's wrong with it? $300-$400 is a typical "core" value, and even then it depends on what they find when they open it up.. Does it have bellhousing/clutch-fork/slave-spacer/shifter/flywheel/clutch+PP/etc.? A bare T56 junkyard pull usually runs $800, so $600 sounds alot to me without knowing more..

Re: T56 price question?

Depends on what wrong with it. I paid $1000 for a complete change over setup and had to put a few parts in the T56. The usual 3/4 syncro keys broke and did some damage. Ask the seller what problem the trans had, and the next thing is do you trust what he says?

Edit..............looks like Mike posted 3 minutes before me.............he's an expert. Go with what he says and ignore my ramblings

Here's what the guy says:

"Second gear is gone, it acts like neutral"

Re: T56 price question?

The synchro engagement teeth on 2nd gear are one of the weak spots in the LT1-T56s. Assuming that's all (though usually every one I open up also needs reverse), you're looking at $250 in 2nd gear+synchro. A new friction kit should be put in, as you'll have it completely apart anyway and metal has been through everything ($200). If you do it all yourself, you'll save that, otherwise look at $200-$300 in labor. Add another $200 if reverse has to get done ($100 if the synchro can be flipped)

I usually get all my parts from thegearbox.org and prices I quote are reflected there..

Thanks a bunch. I was gonna have this place do the rebuild:

http://www.tick-performance.com/tickshift/

$675 - trans
$1000 - rebuild
$175 - shipping to
$100 - shipping from

$1950 for a ready to go trans. What do you guys think? Seems like the $1000 rebuild is a bit much, but I do also understand that sometimes you just have to pay for it to be done right.

85MikeTPI, what would your services cost for a comparable rebuild? Hook me up, and you'll have my business all day! I've cash in hand too. Thanks man.

Re: T56 price question?

The Tick rebuild is a performance upgrade pkg, you'd still be charged extra for broken items like the 2nd gear and Rev gear (if needed).

FWIW, I usually charge $150 labor plus parts costs from thegearbox. I use the same methods to ship as Tick, so the costs are the same for that. I only replace / add the parts needed, so most of the time the total cost is much lower than a package.

Re: T56 price question?

A buck fifty is a great price for labor by the way, with all the shimming you need to do to set end play and make sure it's right the first time is well worth what Mike charges. A T56 isn't that hard to do if you have previous manual trans experience and have the dial indicator, mic to check shim thickness, press, and rear counter shaft end play setting tool, or can make one like I did. If your not experienced and do not have any of the tools, pay the $$$ to someone with a good reputation like Mike has and have it done right the first time.
