Axle/Gears: not sure

Shifter handle removal

was wondering if anybody could tell me the proper way to pull the handle part of the shifter off without messing anything up...

I figured the thumb button may complicate things?

I need to replace the shifter boot and console top plate with new ones I just got a nice deal on ...
