I have a automatic v-8 rs. Last night i pulled into park and it stayed in drive so i put it in neutral then tryed to put it in reverse to back up a little and there feels like there nothing there. Any idea what it could be 120,000 miles on the car.

 

Broken/loose shifter cable (either end), broken/loose internal linkages in the transmission, etc. I'd start by visually inspecting the shifter cable.

 

well just went out to look at it. the shifter moves just fine.but when in park, reverse or neutral when running its stuck in drive. still think its the shifter cable.but when the cars off park is neutral,park wont set so the car rolls. i just bought the car iv put 144.1 miles on it so im taking it to the dealership today to see if they'll fix it.

 

Try manually moving the shift lever on the side of the transmission. Can you get it into park that way? When you put the shifter into park does the car still want to roll away? Does the car drive in neutral?

 

well i live at the barrack in san diego and dont have a jack to jack the car up till later when i go down to the hobby shop.when i put the shifter in park when the cars started it trys to drive away and its the same with putting it in reverse and neutral.Now when the cars not running and i put it park it rolls away.

 

So park, reverse, and neutral all act like forward gears? If the shifter is actually shifting the transmission, I'd say the transmission is lunched.

Park should engage a parking pawl that physically prevents the car from rolling, which is why I'd suspect the shifter isn't actually shifting the transmission.

 

ok thanks im going to take a look under the car. i think its the shift linkage. i havent had a problem with the tranny ran great till yesterday. post back later i have to change my oil today anyways.

 

You don't need to jack the car up, you can reach the shift lever when it's on the ground.
