Newly rebuilt 700r4 slips only in 4th. WTF??
Newly rebuilt 700r4 slips only in 4th. WTF??
I'm taking it back to my tranny guy Monday morning, but I figured I'd ask you guys if you have any theories on my problem over the weekend. Just got my 700r4 rebuilt using Dana's (Pro Built) street/strip rebuild kit with his modified Transgo 2-3 shift kit, corvette servo, and a 2600 stall converter. It took me forever to finally get the TV cable adjusted correctly. I just put a brand new 350 in topped off with the Super Ram intake, and let me tell ya, it's a royal PITA to get the geometry correct on the TV cable with that damn intake! I finally got it right by purchasing a shorter TV wire link made by Sonnax that goes on the trans end of the cable. When I had the pan off there wasn't any debris at all in the pan and the fluid is still bright red, so I'm thinking the clutches are probably still just fine. It now shifts at just the right time, and it's good and firm in all gears until you put it in OD. When it's in OD, even if you just lightly step on the gas, you can watch the tach go up rapidly. If you floor it in OD, it'll kick down just fine and haul *****, but just as soon as you try to cruise in OD and lightly step on the gas it slips like mad again. I'm wondering if the 4th apply servo isn't functioning properly or maybe one of the sequence valves in the VB is stuck? You guys have any ideas? I'm no expert with autos and this is obviously beyond my capacity to diagnose properly. Just thought I'd pick you guys' brains for any possible causes. Thanks in advance!

are you sure it's not your 2600 rpm stall converter? If I understand correctly, the 2600 rpm stall converter will "slip" till it gets to 2600 rpm and then after that it will still slip slightly. do you have a lock up converter?

Maybe you have to much low end power in the motor for the 4th gear band to hold the power causing it to slip. I had my 700r4 rebuilt with over $1400 worth of HD stuff to hold the power. I have never had any problems with 1-3 gear but after a few hard pulls on the freeway it now will not hold power in 4th gear. I can cruse in OD but if i give it any gass at all it will slip and the RPMs will rev like its in N. Kinda sucks....im guessin the OD band is shot and slipping.
whatever it is keep up posted cus i would like to fix mine one day so i can use OD that way it should be used!

Well guys, I think I pretty much got it straightened out today after a visit with my trans guy. One of the problems I've fought with relentlessly was trying to get the damn TV cable set right. What made it such a PITA to get set right was the Super Ram intake. It puts the cable on quite a bind where it comes out from underneath that huge plenum and into the throttle bracket. That intake really messes with the geometry on the TV cable. I finally managed to get it adjusted right by putting in a shorter wire link made by Sonnax, that goes between the end of the TV cable and the plunger/bellcrank assembly down in the trans valve body area. Now I have a lot more adjustment range up at the throttle. My trans guy loosened it up one more click since I had it set just a tad too tight. He found the main problem though. I had a weenie governor in there initially since the trans was behind a L03 motor originally, so I grabbed the high performance "vette" governor out of the extra trans I have sitting on the back porch. That trans came out of a 91 L98 GTA. I guess from the trans sitting for several years, the governor managed to get some debris in it where the valve slides back and forth, so it would stick sometimes and not stick other times. We took it out at his shop today, took it apart and cleaned it out thoroughly, then put it back in. Now everything seems to be working like it should! Now the shift points are right where they should be and the tach doesn't go sky high in OD anymore. It'll slip up just a couple hundred rpms, then it locks up like it should. My converter does have lockup, and being around 24-2600 stall, I notice sometimes I do have to run it up to around 25-2600 rpms for a sec, then ease off the pedal, and then it locks up. He checked my fluid too and said it still smells new(not burnt) and it's still perfectly red in color, so I think I got the problem licked before any serious damage was done to anything! Hey 355, I doubt it's your band because 2nd gear uses the same band as OD, so if your band is slipping you'd probably have issues in 2nd gear also. I'm guessing your ECM isn't locking up the converter when it should for some reason. Let's hope it's that and not the 3-4 clutches slipping! If you can't get your ECM to lock it up when you want it to, you could always install either a vacuum actuated lockup or hydraulically activated lockup system and set it exactly where you want it to lockup. Believe me, I was seriously eyeballing one of those kits before I got this figured out! Superior sells a nice lockup kit for about $85. I also saw an electric switch activated one that you wire in where the factory 3 prong plug goes into the trans. Procare transmissions sells that one on ebay for like $39. Wouldn't hurt to check your governor too. Who knows, you might have a sticky valve in it like I did! That seemed to be all that was needed on mine was just to clean it out real good and put it back in, and it fixed the excess slipping in OD.
