Delayed engaging in drive

Hello all. I have a 89 rs 305 tbi (automatic).
Since Ive owned it; its had delay when i put it in drive, it'll rev up( if i step on it ) then "clunk" into gear and take off 3 or 4 seconds later.
If I'm just stopped and i release brake it goes instantly. My reverse isn't that bad ( almost instant) so i don't think its the tranny.
Ive been reading about torque arms, is that a possibility? Im not sure what a torque arm even does. Could it be torque converter? Any advice would be very much appreciated. Also sometimes (once a week maybe) i stall when idling in drive, I think this is unrelated but just in case it is.
One other thing; if i step on the gas to quick and hard i get no power it just revs into nothing, (kinda like a bad clutch) i know this is normal for auto trannies but it's a little more that what i think is normal.
Thanks in advance.
Nick

Re: Delayed engaging in drive

Check ALL suspension parts for tightning.

Ckeck trans fluid--
color should be a nice red~NOT brown or black.
The trans fluid should NOT have a burnt smell or a bad smell.

Check the reare differential for excess play // movement.

If everything checks good, it " COULD " be a bad trans & // or bad torque converter. I don't know how to tell which or if both are bad.

Also check the U-joints.

Sounds to me like a trans // torque converter bad!!!
