starter / flexplate rattle
hello ,
i am new to this website so bare with me i am learing. i have a 82 camaro with a old school 327 from (1968) with a 700r4 trans. The problem i am having and could never figure out until i took out my trans to beef it up this past winter is:
i have this interminant metallic rattle...... it is the powermaster mini torque starter gear hitting the flexplate...ever so slightly ...causing the rattle...it sounds like a heatshield coming loose. it does it sometimes when in reverse or when i am at a light and starting to go....starts rattling and then goes away...it is anoying and i am running out of ideas.
i have painted the plate to see where it is hitting
pryed on it to get it not to hit
added and taken out all kinds of shims
pryed on the starter when installing it so....it truely is as far back as it can go from the flywheel
any ideas or sugestions would be great..................

Re: starter / flexplate rattle
Mine did that too. I took the three flexplate to torque convertor bolts out and spun the convertor around to align the holes to the next hole. Fixed my problem.

Re: starter / flexplate rattle
it did it before i changed the covertor, but only when loaded in reverse usually. now it seems to be worse depending on what i am doing...usually at light when taking off...it took me forever to figure out what was the noise. ok i will try that...spinning trick...did you use any shims on the starter at all. i have a powermaster mini torque starter. i did watch the flywheel while i started it...and it goes as straight and it can go.

Re: starter / flexplate rattle
I have no shims on the starter. I too have a powermaster mini starter. The one with what looks like spray on bedliner on it. If the flywheel is spinning straight then this may not help. Mine had a little bit of wobble to it.
Dumb question, is the flexplate on the right way? (not even 100% sure you could put it on either way)

ok i will try taking out all the shims and spinning the torwue convertor trick...you may be right...i am willing to try anything at this point in time. yep, i have the same starter you have. it looks to be on the right way, i never took it off when i redid the trans. it too does wobble a little bit i just meant that it doesn't have a bad bent spot in it. because you as well as i know how anoying and embarrassing this noise isa. see i added shims thnking it would help.. but i think it got worse.
