Keep 700r4 or swap for the TH400?

Hello everyone, iv'e recently aquired a new aftermarket th400 that was built like a tank with an aftermarket torque converter and has only 3,000 miles on it. I'm fully aware that the th400 does not have overdive and the 700r4 does.

However my car is going to be a weekend warrior and will only be driven around in the city. I'm not going to take it on the freeway and travel long distances with it. I'm installing a new 350 small block that will exceed 400hp and will have a 3.43 rear end.

Should I spend the money to rebuild the 700r4, or should I install the th400? What would you do if you were on a tight buget?

Thanks for taking the time to read, this is my first post! And i'm going on my 3rd week of being an official Camaro owner!! = )

since those are your only 2 choices i'd say go TH400. though i would beef up a TH350.

Well isn't the th350 a 700r4 with overdrive? I read that somwhere in a forum on the net. I think it would be a wise decision, I just have to upgrade the transmission cooler because they are know to run a little hot. = ) It would be a comforting thought to know that know matter what you do with your car, your never going to serisouly strain your transmission.

Thank you for your opinion man!

i think some of the internal drive parts are similar but other than that there very different. the more parts inside the tranny, thats just more that can go wrong. thats why the powerglide is so popular with racing. i'm pushing 600hp through my TH350 with no breakage yet. plus it lighter and easier on the engine to operate.

Yeah your right.. I think i'm going to bite the bullet and have the 700r4 rebuilt, it would pay off in the long run. The th400 requires 40hp to run, while the powerglide requires 18hp...

Thanks for the opinion!

im pushing at least 350hp through my 700r4 and its good so far. get the shift kit from probuilt. its about $125. whatever you do don't make the same mistake as i did and install a b&m shift kit. the part throttle shifts are too hard and the full throttle shifts are too soft.
