Do you have to replace your rearend to change gear ratios?

If you want a different gear ratio in your rear end do you have to swap in a whole new rear or can you just adjust\swap the gears themselves?

Also, if I pop off the diff. cover to get the numbers will the fluid leak out and need replacing?

you can just swap the gears inside the rearend. It is not a simple swap. It must be set back up correctly or the gears can be ruined.

Yes if you open the cover all the fluid will drain out.

Thanks for the info!

(part a): And once done you have to change the speedo gear or whatever it's called by the tranny right? Is that only for cable speedos? Like, if I was planing on replacing my speedometer anyway, could doing so at the same time save me any work or do I have to change that speedo gear regardless?

(part b): It's just standard gear oil right? Do I need any special kind?

Hmm! I always thought a new pumpkin was needed, so a 2.72 (forgive me, i forget the exact number if that's not it) to a 3.23 (again... can't remember the exact number) is possible in the stock axle?

Most of your questions, to include the ones above, can probably be answered in the following FAQ:

2.73 to any gear ratio made for the 7.5" is possible in the stock housing. The housing is just that, a housing. The only thing that sometimes has to be changed is the carrier because of different thicknes's.

Thanks, that's good to know ahead of time. I'm leary about changing out the whole back end when i really don't want to, i'm happy with what's there for now.
