what are my options on a upgraded rear?
what are my options on a upgraded rear?
i just put a 550hp motor in my carand it had a shot of nitrous. its a 92 rs orig 6cyl. it currently has a 10 bolt from a 99 camaro. but i know once i ditch my semi stock 700r4 and get my new wheels and tires that the 10 bolt is gonna hatin life. and plus.... my big nasty soundin car one wheel peels which in now way is cool.. lol. what im wondering is what is the best bang for your buck when it comes to a swap? i cant afford to spend 1500-2000 bucks on a rearend... just kinda wondering what my options are.

Re: what are my options on a upgraded rear?
Your options are save your money and get a Moser 12 bolt, or you could get a Moser 9 inch housing and axle package for about $990 and use a junk yard center for a while. When you spend a bunch of money on a powerfull engine you must also spend money on a strong transmission and rear end. 550 HP isn't going to do squat for you if the car won't move.
Re: what are my options on a upgraded rear?
Ha I know I'm workin on it. I just got the motor in and the car runnin yesterday. The 700r4 in there has a lil work done to it and converter... I know t won't last I has a 350 and like a 700hp rebuild kit but I haven gotten it built. That is my next stage I just wantd to get it driveable as I save up money to do everything else... I just need a converter and have it put togather but I know once I get a stout tranny and my
vette wheels with drag radials it's not gonna last long... This is just a street car and I doubt will ever see the track... But it will def see some abuse. Lol

The Strange S60 is a nice option. http://www.strangeengineering.net/catalog/075.html
A bit spendy but frickin' sweet.
I think you can find a Ford 9 inch that's really nice and ready to install for around $1700 or maybe less if you shop around. I found a guy on Ebay who builds these for our cars, so they bolt right in, and I think he told me $1600 to $1700 for the thing.
oops....I just read that you can't afford to spend that much. You'll have to do some shopping around.

Re: what are my options on a upgraded rear?
I know this is not the best set up for a car that is going to see allot of track time. Mines is a daily driver that has a some miles so its rarely going to see a track. Here's some photos of my 10 bolt upgrade including a Eaton 28 spline posi, new 28 spline axles ,3.42 ring and pinon, and LPW Ultimate cover.
Probably not what your looking for but I thought I would share this with you .Its a 5.0 with some bolt -ons, but I wanted to switch from 2.73s to 3.42s and put in a Eaton posi. The LPW cover just seemed to be the logical choice after reading this .
Here's a link to LPW Racing that I found very helpful when looking for a cover, etc . http://www.lpwracing.com/p_capcovers.asp and here's the tube braces http://www.lpwracing.com/p_axletubebrace.asp

Re: what are my options on a upgraded rear?
That link was for the 12 bolt cover, but it's all good. I want to get the same cover for my 10 bolt. I really think that a street car pushing around 400 horsepower should be fine with a 28 splined 10 bolt. It might even be fine up to 500 horsepower. I say run that until it breaks, if it ever breaks. If you drag race the heck out of a 550 hp engine, the 10 bolt might fail quickly, but then again it may surprise you and hold up for quite a number of passes.
The peace of mind with a Strange, Moser, or Ford rear end would be nice, but you sure pay for it. My theory is run what you have, and see how long it lasts. If it lasts, great, if not...well....$$ spending time.

Soon as you put a sticky tire on any 10 bolt the will break. I might be the first time out it might be next year but its gonna break with a sticky tire. If you have street tires and spin it will live.

Re: what are my options on a upgraded rear?
I actually did the same thing as ronusmcmma. I have the following junk in my rear.
Superior 3 series carrier
Richmond 4.10 gears
Powertrax no slip locker
solid pinion spacer
Superior 28 spline evo series axles
1/2 wheel studs
Summit Aluminum Girdle cover
Welded axle tubes
heres some pics

I run a 15x10 rim and a 275 street tire and If i ever put a slick on my car it would be the end of the 10 bolt.

Re: what are my options on a upgraded rear?
You must scroll down on that link to see the 10 bolt . I agree that a car you are going to run at the track could and would benefit from a stronger rear than a hopped up 10 bolt . That being said, my car will not see a track. Its a nice looking street car. With a 5.0 and auto trans.( some bolt ons) The hole rear end job including everything and a 3 year warranty was 1,200.00 . The men that installed it were real pros. Very happy with there work. Here's their link =
