Ford 9" Build Question
Ford 9" Build Question
Im trying to duplicate the moser 9" bolt in rear end, I have the bracket for the torque arm, I ordered the GM small with ford big bearing ends
The question is, How can I use my factory disc brakes. Moser is saying I have to use the 98-02 backing plate. Are there any other options, I read somewhere that the factory backing plate could be machined and drilled. If so, does anybody have those measurements.
Oh ya, And Strange says there is a .520 ofset. Does that mean one axle is 1/2 longer. The measurements on the website show the centerline .520 away from the pinion. Is the pinion centerline where the .520 measurement is. Or is 1 axle tube .520 longer.

Re: Ford 9" Build Question
If you got the 7900D housing ends then the disc brake brackets should work. As for the offset, all GM car rear ends have the pinion offset 1/2 inch to the right. The axle length on the 9 inch is going to be different on each side anyway just because of the design of the rear end.

Re: Ford 9" Build Question
i used my fatory brackets had them machined to hold the bearing in place then drilled new holes to attach the bracket to the housing eb miller sells the brackets to do the same i like his better cause you can remove his bracket w/o unpressing the bearings off i'm gonna get a pair of his
Re: Ford 9" Build Question
Do the Strange housing ends have a place for the factory axle seals? The Strange housing ends that I have seen didn't have a place for these seals and the axles will usually leak oil. This is why I like the Moser housing ends. They will accept the original type axle seals and don't leak. The Strange ends that I have seen rely on the O ring on the axle bearing to seal them, which often doesn't work.
Re: Ford 9" Build Question
I just looked up the Strange H1143 housing ends and they do not have a place for the original type axle seals. The Moser 7900D ends would work better. These housng ends will accept the axle seals and they allow the bearing to sit flush with the surface of the housing ends so that the disc brake caliper brackets don't have to be counter bored to bolt onto the end. The other housing ends are going to make the bearing stick out 1/8 inch, so the caliper bracket will have to be counter bored before it will bolt up.

Re: Ford 9" Build Question
well crap!, i have them now so i have to use them. I could silicone them for additional protection. Now about the offset. the moser 9" incorperate the 1/2 " offset for the pinion? Most 9" rear ends are 2" offset at the carrier, one tube would be 2 1/2" longer than the other one?.

Re: Ford 9" Build Question
Moser does sell the lower control arm brackets seperately. They also sell lower adjustable control arm brackets. Big Gear Head give Moser a call. I'm pretty sure that they started selling them that way this past year.
Re: Ford 9" Build Question
Thanks for letting me know. I was not aware of that. I know I have had people wanting to buy brackets for the Chevelle rear ends for several years and I could not get them before.
Re: Ford 9" Build Question
I talked to moser, they sell the lower control arm brackets, I never asked about the adjustable lower control arm brackets, I might just have to ask them and order those.
