ring and pinion
Re: ring and pinion
Reading the contact pattern is very important. If you can read the contact pattern then you will know what adjustments need to be made to the pinion depth and backlash. Setting the bearing preload requires a preload gauge, which is just a small beam or dial type torque wrench. Having a good installation kit is also very important. A junk installation kit can make the job harder.
Re: ring and pinion
do you mean foot pounds? is there a shim for the ring gear to the carrier. i have the pinion in as far as it can go with out hitting the carrier and no shims on the nonring gear side. this is becomming a nightmare......thanks for any help

Bearing prelolad is measured in inch pounds. This is not the same thing as torque on the nut. Bearing preload is the amount of torque required to turn the pinion gear in the bearings.
I believe you have the wrong series differential for the gears that you are trying to install. A 3.23 to 4.10 gear goes on a 3 series differential. A 3.08 to 2.41 gear goes on a 2 series differential. If you are trying to put a 3 series gear on a 2 series differeital then it won't work.
