153 tooth Flywheel or 168??? Which is better?

OK, I'm doing my T5 swap. Looks like my options are to keep my starter and buy a 168 tooth flywheel, and buy an 11" clutch, or buy a new starter, buy the 153 tooth, and buy a 10.5" clutch.

Seems like the 153 tooth, with the smaller diameter would have a little less rotating mass, hence making it the better option. However, lots of you have mentioned NOT liking the "lightweight" flywhees for one reason or another, so maybe the minimal weight difference isn't an issue? ...and The 168 would let me keep the starter...

I know that with this stuff there really isn't a "right" answer, but I'm just looking for thoughts and opinions.

thanks,
Chris

i dont see how a larger diameter clutch would be a bad thing at all, so i'd go with the larger one. However, i did put an aluminum flywheel on my Mustang and it was the cat's meow, but it did use a larger than stock clutch as well (11"). I didnt notice that the lighter flywheel hurt performance or made shifting more difficult. I figured it has enough rotating mass just being a v8 (especially the Mustang, being OHC and all).

I have no idea how the size would affect a clutch system but 153 and 168 flexplates are also available. The larger diameter gives more torque multiplication for the starter to crank over a bigger engine.

The way a clutch works, it's better to have rotating mass if the engine has to move a lot of weight. A small clutch/flywheel is fine in a small lightweight car but the bigger and heavier the vehicle, the bigger the clutch should be unless you go into multiple disk clutches.

Does the 168 tooth fit in the bellhousing? I know on some cars it won't, but don't remember why. I know the 168 tooth fits in the 700R4 - that's why I thought maybe it's the T5 that it doesn't fit in.

Check this thread - I got confused in the discussion, but maybe sheds some light:

I'm just not sure that the 168 tooth fits in the T5 housing.

From what I understand the 11" clutch will not fit in the T5 bellhousing. However, I would LOVE to be wrong. This would save me a world of headache in a project I am currently planing out.

Interesting. I never thought about whether or not they'd fit the T5.

I'll probably go the safe route and go 153

The 168 tooth doesnt fit in the t-5 bell, your only option for running the 168 tooth is an aftermarket bell like Mcclouds modular one, but its pricey as hell.

the 168 tooth flywheel will not fit the stock T5 bellhousing..... when i went from auto to manuel T5 ...the 168 tooth 14' flywheel did not fit in the T5 bellhousing ...i coudn't use a 153 tooth 13' flywheel because of my starter ..it woudn't reach and crank the smaller flywheel(1978 350)...so i left my starter as is and didn't want to drill the block so i could move the starter closer to the 153 tooth flywheel....i got a new flywheel with 168 teeth and with 2 bolt hole patterns fot the 10.5' stock clutch(which i used) and 11' clutch ...but got a lakewood pricey bellhousing so the larger flywheel fits in ...it all works nice now after a few heart attacks trying to find the right parts!!...hope this helps
