I just bought an 1983 Silverado 5.0 and I assume it's a 700r4, but I'm not quite sure. Anyway, the trans shifts really funny. The guy I bought it from doesn't know a thing about cars and said his mechanic told him to fix the linkage for $30. Well, when I drive it i start it out in drive then after about 15-20mph it downshifts itself, then I have to put it into 2nd and it will drive fine after that.

I haven't gotten to dealing with this yet, as the motor is shot and that's my #1 priority. But first question is do 83's have the 700r4? And do the linkages go out, or should I just buy a decent used one?
