Re: T5 rebuild

Unless you want to keep it for it's originality, I would recomend swapping it for a T56. the T5 I rebuilt for my 94 V6 went well but they're still not as strong.

Not too hard to DIY.. I believe the sticky has the tools needed to do the job, and you can get most parts cheap enough. ( I get my Tremec parts from thegearbox.net)

Re: T5 rebuild

upgrade to a G-Force case if you want to put lots of power through it,
the T56 is over rated.

no one needs 2 over drives, a close ratio 5 speed with 1 OD is what they should of done.

Re: T5 rebuild

I have rebuilt two T5s, one NWC and one WC. They are a little bit different, but I actually found the WC to be the easier of the two.

The best favor you could do yourself is to go to Hanlonmotorsports.com, and order their DIY T5 DVD. It gives you a step by step teardown and rebuild, with lots of useful tips and commentary. It was well worth the $25 it cost me.

I'm not saying it's for everyone, but if you have the proper tools, it's not that bad of a job.

Got $$$$?

as for the go T56 comments, probably will eventually, I'm looking at a cheap L03 5 speed car that lost reverse, if it's cheaper to rebuild it, thats whats I'll do.

Thanks for the help.

Not really, a T56 is gonna cost a grand easy, for just the trans unless you got good connection. One will spend $1500+ easy for the full set up and change over.

a G-Force case is only $350 and fixes the flex issues that makes a T5 "weak"

It would cost the same or less, more likley less as you don't have to do a bunch of work changing the set up, if the car is already T5 ready with pedals n hydrolic clutch parts.

A $350 T5 case will just put $350 into someone else's pocket and leave you with the same weak T5.

I wasn't really saying that like I know for sure either way, I was just saying you can make anything strong with enough money.

Re: T5 rebuild

While I'm at it I guess I should ask, what would cause a T5 to lose reverse? I'm not sure how gone it is yet, I'm going to look at it tomorrow.

Re: T5 rebuild

I remember reading about the case flexing and 3rd gear being the one to go.. If this is true and I bought a rebuild kit about how much would I spend on the rebuild... I would prob go with the gforce case and get a centerforce dual friction clutch for 300.. Including the clutch how much dough am I spending to rebuild it

Re: T5 rebuild

A rebuild kit will cost between 250 and 300... more if you have to buy any other parts (rebuild kits are just small parts and bearings).

For example, my output shaft was beat up where it connects to the input shaft, and it cost $90 to have the shaft repaired.

Re: T5 rebuild

If you want a stronger T5 you need the G-Force rebuild kit. Supposedly those are good for 500-600 foot pounds of torque depending on which G-Force rebuild kit you get. The T56 can be made even stronger than that but either option will cost you some serious cash.

Re: T5 rebuild

I remember somewhere on here reading a thread about using S10 T5 internals which were supposed to be stronger, not I can't find that thread anywhere, am I crazy for thinking such a thread existed?

The S10 T5 is weaker. You can download the complete rebuild manual from Tremec's sight for free.

Thanks, for all of the help so far, are there any little things that can be done to a T5 during a rebuild that can improve strength?

Re: T5 rebuild

Be sure that you get the bearing preload right. If you screw that up then the transmission will not last as long as it should.

I know you do alot of dealings with transmissions, so I want your opinion. what do you think of the G-force HD T5 transmission case?

Re: T5 rebuild

I do a lot more rear ends than transmissions. I haven't had any experience with the G Force case. There are several things that determine the strength of a transmission. The strength of the case is one of them, but the center to center distance between the shafts is probably the most improtant. The T5 was designed as a light duty transmission and there isn't a lot that you can do to improve it. The weak case is one of the problems with this transmission, but you can't change the distance between the shafts.

Re: T5 rebuild

I assume the center to center distance determines how large of gears you can put in it, would that be correct?

Yes, the greater the distance the larger, and stronger, the gears.
