Gear for my combo

Ok I've got a posi in a 82 parts car that I'm going to put in my 86 (if its a 3 series). I've all ready got a set of 3.73s, 2 sets of 3.42s, and maybe a 3.23 if thats whats in my 82. Out of those gears what would you think would be a good all around gear. I think I've got 3.08s or 273s now and no more than I've driven my car it seems like its not going to be to powerful at low rpm so I just want something to help it out down low and still have decent cruise speed.
thanks

Re: Gear for my combo

3.23's are a good all around gear, my bird pulled as hard as my z28 with 3.73's and better mileage to boot.

Re: Gear for my combo

From my cars, I've decided that a 3.23:1 is an economy ratio more than a performance gear. It's a compromise, because 3.08:1 is generally even better mileage. It's been several years since I chose anything less than a 3.42:1 gear, because it's a great match for a 700R-4 with a mild 350.

Re: Gear for my combo

I've had 3.73 gears behind a 305 / T5 and would do it again. 3.42 would work fine. I would not do 3.23.

Re: Gear for my combo

I went from a 2.73 to a 3.42 and really like the way it handles. I would not go any lower than that. By the way you might consider a LPW support cover. Cant hurt to have one on a 10 bolt.
