700r4 questions

Ok I think my head is going to explode... I have been looking all over and can't seem to find answers. This is my first endeavor this deep into the v8automotive world and really appreciate the help I get here.

I am running a 383 stroker with stock 700r4 for purposes of testing the motor. I have only driven it 2-3 miles knowing it's limitations.

I am looking for it's replacement. I have decided to stay with the 700r4. I was wondering if any one had any experience with the eBay trans dealers. The deals are great, their ratings a good and I am on a budget.

I am using the torque converter that was on the 305 previously. Does this need to be replaced. Should I replace the flex plate as well.

Also I took the car out and of course couldn't resist testing it. The car is slow. About the same as the 305. Is the trans limiting this or should I look elsewhere. It is a moderately built 383. I know this is a little vague question but I don't know how to ask it differently right now.

I'm not, nor do I claim to be an expert on 700s (personally, I dislike them), but the trans itself probably isn't limiting you. being a 700. I've seen many 700s built to handle 500hp that stand up to it quite well. As far as noticing differences between a 305 and 383, you should definitely notice a big gain. If you don't, it probably could be more attributed to the torque converter or simply the clutches in your original 700.

Just some thought.

Re: 700r4 questions

If you only have 2-3 miles on the motor, could it be that you have yet to get your timing and fuel setup correctly? If you're running a carb, would you need to get all your jetting and power valves set right? I know when I swapped the 305 for the mild 327 it felt about the same but after some tuning it's really starting to get into it's power.

If the transmission worked before and you have it setup propperly it's going to work fine for testing. The only thing about the converter is that if you are running a big cam and need to idle above 700rpm, it's going to be fighting that and will try to stall every time you try to stop. Flexplate should be fine unless you are splitting hairs and need a lightweight one.

My guess is that you have some tuning bugs to work out with the engine that will make things seem a lot better.

Re: 700r4 questions

What headers and exhaust do you have?

Did you adjust the TV cable properly after the swap? If the geometry between the bracket and the carb changed in anyway it will need adjusted.

Something is wrong if your "butt dyno" is reading right. Even if it had the cam and heads from the 305 it will still pull much harder given the added displacement. I'm sure you didn't use them I'm just using it as an example.

Re: 700r4 questions

If you are running the stock TPI and injectors/ecm, you are choking that poor motor to death????
As far as Trans. I run a stage 3 Monster trans and love it, you could probably get away w/ a stage 2 model easily.
Go to eatmyshift.com Alot of guys will tell you go w/ ProBuilt automatics, which I've owned and it didn't hold up for my use. Just make sure you get something that has been beefed up all the way through, and isn't just a 700R4 w/a shiftkit in it......
