I ran across a T5 for next to nothing. Just want your guys' opinions.

I've heard the T5 is weak but will it be strong enough for a 6.0?

 

Late model 6.0, 345hp or so? With any traction at all I'd guess the tranny will grenade pretty quick if you have a heavy foot. And getting it to fit up would be a bear too I suspect.

 

well thats not good to hear! lol. What should i look for then? I definitely want a manual trans.

 

what are t-5's going for? if its really cheap you might just pick it up and wait til someone needs one a make a couple bucks. if you have room to store it anyway. I think you want the t-56 if im not mistaken

 

well he wants to trade for my broke a*^ 700r4. I just figured it would be one step closer to what i really wanted. I have just been on the fence about it just didn't know what to do.

 

First question that needs answering is......

How are you gonna fit a GenI transmission to a GenIII block?

 

yeah how is he going to do that? i cant recall what the bell housing looks like on those newer chevy engines.

 

you can get the T-56 to bolt up to the SBC if you get the bellhousing from a 93-97.

 

But that has nothing to do with the OPs problem.

He wants to put a SBC tranny on a LS block.

 

So then ya answered his question yes it is too much for a t-5. too much time wasting to get it to work. he did ask what else could he do. so therefore he can get a a 93-97 bellhousing and put a t56 in!

 

or look into the tko 600 or 500 depending on what you need lighter that the t56 more tq rating but a little more money

93-97 is still a GenI block, so the question still remains. Regardless of a T5 or T56.....GenI tranny on a GenIII block?

dang, i didn't even think about the t5 not bolting up. Like i said it was just an idea since i found one. I have been looking for a t56 for about 3 weeks i would say and the cheapest i see is around 1600-2200 range and thats way too much. I'm sure I'll run across a deal soon. I'll just have to wait it out i guess. Oh and thanks for the bell housing info mos68 i will definitely remember that!

What year is the T5?
If you car was 82-83, I'd consider trading you a T56 for T5 + cash.

yes it will bolt up, well, only 5 bolts with instead of 6. You can drill and tap the 6th bolt. The next problem is linkage, and a flywheel.

 

I just replaced the t5 in my 87 IROC. Stock 305 TPI engine. Mustang jumped on me on the interstate. I downshifted to third gear at about 80 mph and wound it up to about 110. Mustang disappeared from site, but when I exited off of the interstate, transmission locked up. Fluid and metal shi* coming out. Not good. $800 for used t5. No more racing with t-5, costs too much.

 

use a t-56 from a ls f body, why hasn't that been mentioned. 98-02 camaros and birds. it's going to be a hydro clutch, so you'll need a master cylinder and fab the clutch linkage to it, and you need a clutch pedal. maybe you can get the pedals, master, and tranny from a 4th gen. then go to shohn or some racing company and get the ls t-56 crossmember. and the good thing about grabbing a tranny from a 4th gen is the torque arm mount should be on it. then you'll need to connect the reverse lockout solenoid to your brake switch and pull out the cags solenoid that'll upshift you from 1st to 4th on low acceleration. and if you don't have a custom electric speedo, then you'll need an adapter to convert the electrical speedo to mechanical or live without it. you had an auto.. you'll need a shifter console top part with the boot, you'll have to cut a hole in the floor. you'll have to splice into your harness on the old shifter for reverse lights, and you can either bypass or connect the neutral safety switch to the clutch pedal. this is the cheapest way to complete such a swap. i would get a new clutch, and resurface the flywheel too. if you can grab the driveshaft it'll fit in your 3rd gen, most 82-02 driveshafts are the same, but the new ones are aluminum.

 

best bet would be to come across a wrecked or parts car. That way you would have everything you need in one shot, and could sell the rest to recoupe your money.

The T5's weakest link is its case flex. no amount of rebuiling or upgrading can fix THAT.
