Re: 4L80E Swap

I absolutly hate my Lokar, to the point of making and access hole and a short tube directly above the port on the trans.... You can't read the lokar after you put some in.... and it take forever to pour it in... hate it... is there a trick for these problems... jesss

HHmmmm, I might just get a custom peice from PST as I'm pretty sure the aluminum one is not going to cut it.

Re: 4L80E Swap

jonarotz
Thinking about swapping 4l65 or 60E instead rebuild another 700 again my trans is acting up only drives in D and acts like neutral in [D] 2nd one in 2nd thidgen and this one only has 3000 miles on it
Just venting but back on subject on hand..
so a couple questions
4l80e is longer then 4l60e/65e ?
Driveshaft Modification need with 4l60e/65e ?
Is it a direct bolt up to L98 TPI or 1st Gen SBC to be correct ?
To control trans i was thinking EZ-TCU or SIMPLESHIFT

i have pretty mild engine l98 bolt ons cam and soon 1.6 rockers lt1 intake nothing special
plan to swap lq9 later down the road no rush tho
and how hard does your trans shift with the trans go ie crisp hard violent does it chirp the tire in 2nd

If i miss those answers in the tread ill read again its late so reading not too good ill read again in the morning thank you!!!!!

Re: 4L80E Swap

The length difference is very minimal if I recal. The biggest problem is mount location is further back.

You will need to put a different slip yoke on the driveshaft. The 4L80E has a larger output shaft.

The trans go kit is very nice, no banging just really crisp and firm.

It will bolt right to your small block.

I use a TCI controller for mine.

Re: 4L80E Swap

I had to build mine, Angle Iron and rectagular tubing. Hey Jonarotz, Quick question. I see you had a bolt on yoke on your 4l80e. Did you have splines all the way down? Or half way? How much splines you hav in contact with yoke? 2 or 3"?

I am running a TCI controller and I like the ability to program it the way I want it. I have a spare one that I have been trying to sell if you're interested.

How much farther back is the trans mount on the 80 compared to the 60??
I'm wondering if the TTA trans crossmember would work.

Re: 4L80E Swap

i'm curious what shifter you are using and if you had to modify the linkage on the trans?

i'm having some problems where if i set the cable when in park, i can't get into 1st, and vise versa if i set it in first it won't go into park.

the linkage i have on the trans is from the vehicle the trans came from. it measures 2.25" center to center for the cable to rod on the trans. unfortunately i don't have that same linkage for a 700r4 out of a 3rd gen, not sure if it's the same length or not.

I used my stock shifter for a while, but I had to make a custom bracket. I now run a B&M Megashifter and it seems to work just fine.

Ok, did you use the stock arm from the 700r4? Maybe the length of that is different from the truck one I have.

Got any pics of the mount?

Re: 4L80E Swap

I also run a B&M Megashifter, but below is the shifter arm I'm currently using. It was modified from a 4l60E shifter arm. The 2 1/4 hole is what this arm used on the original (4l60E vehicle). The 1 7/8 hole is what is being used on the Camaro.

Using the "Best" geometry shown below the maximum radius your compatible shifter arm could be estimated by R=Total length of cable travel / (2*sin[45 degrees])
Just noticed I misspelled function, oh well, you get the idea.

Re: 4L80E Swap

For those of you that LS swap....you can use this cross member with the 4L80 adapter. The only down side is you have to use their respective motor mounts. You can use a factory size torque arm.

Using the Holly Blackheart Headers with the Holly Motor mounts and Trans mount you can run long tubes with no issue.

Re: 4L80E Swap

I’m using UMI’s solid motor mounts and their LS swap mounts. Not sure about long tube headers as I’m using forward facing turbo headers. I also don’t have a driveshaft yet. I need to get the car more put back together for weight to take measurements. Planning to order a custom driveshaft from Denny’s.

Re: 4L80E Swap

I'm using long tube headers with the pa racing crossmember but with a sbc, not an ls motor. My driveshaft had to be shortened to 39.5 inches from the stock 42 inches because of the yoke i used. Some 4L80e/T400 yokes are long and some are short. You need to pull off your tail housing on the trans to see which yoke you need.

Not sure this thread is still active but will try anyway. Am doing the same swap (4l80 into 3gen firebird) and having a heck of a time with the shift linkage. Original for the 700r was too long so bought a Shift works cable which is also too long. Trying to use the original shifter/gear selector. What did you end up using for a shift cable?
Thanks.

Not sure if there’s a way to reuse the original shifter and cable. I’m using a B&M megashifter made for our thirdgens. The kit includes a new cable and couple brackets you attach to the transmission.

I'm using the shiftworks cable just fine. It is adjustable so that helps. Take a pic of your alignment. I did have to slot my bracket where it attaches to the trans pan bolts to get it aligned.

Re: 4L80E Swap

Appreciate the feedback. Which b&m megashifter did you use Battmann? Pricey units but they do jazz up the consul a bit.
89gta383, probably don't have a record of which shift works kit you used do you? To make mine fit it had to be routed towards the back of the car and then forward again to take up the slack. Sort of a "S" shape. All this did was make it bind up and not function.

I used the one for 82-92 fbodies with a 4l80E.

You will see in the picture the bracket is different. On the website, toggle between the one for the 700r4 and the one for the 4L80E and you will see the bracket differences. Call them and see if the cable is the same length between those 2 kits?

I used the one for 82-92 fbodies with a 4l80E.

You will see in the picture the bracket is different. On the website, toggle between the one for the 700r4 and the one for the 4L80E and you will see the bracket differences. Call them and see if the cable is the same length between those 2 kits?
I've got that one too it works great

This is a great thread. Appreciate all the info. Do you remember what slip yoke you used? Doing this same swap.
Thanks
