Stock 700R4 auto shifter differences?

Hi - couldn't find this in other posts, so hopefully not a redundant question.

I noticed while installing a new stereo and had my auto console shifter cover plate off that there were two cables coming from the floor toward the shifter.

One is the shift cable, the other I assume is the ignition lock cable. The one I believe is the ignition lock cable was not hooked up.

I hooked it up to a spot on the shifter that looked like where it should hook up, but pushing in the parking release button on the handle was extremely difficult after doing this, almost like the cable was stretched as far as it could go.

With this cable off the shifter will shift into gear when the ignition is off and the button pushes in very easily.

My question is - are there different shifter mechanisms for the '83 Trans Am than maybe the later models? I have a few extra shifters that came with the car that look slightly different than what is in the car, but they are broken and I can't install them to check for differences.

In a nut shell, are there different shifters for the earlier T/A 700R4 set ups than the later models, or is my cable just needed to be pulled through the floor and adjusted better?
