Automatic transmission problem.

Going into town today I passed a car...when my '84 Camaro tried to go into passing gear the motor just "reved" for about a half-second like it was in neutral, then it caught and I went around the car. Seemed just fine the rest of the way into town, cruising at the 65 mph speed limit.

When I got into town at a stop light, then started up again, there was a knocking under load that sounded like it was from underneath the car. It also had some problems shifting...like it took longer than usual. It didn't do it in second, but in drive it also knocks when under load. When it gets up to speed there is not a knock. I was able to baby it back to the house.

It has the factory 700r4 tranny...with about 182,000 miles on it.
