Re: 82 trans am tranny

Original automatic tranny in '82 v8 f-bods was a th200c
Tranny was upgraded in 1982,but still considerd weak
for hard v8 use.
On a C/F '82 with disc rear,should be a 3.23 posi.

Re: 82 trans am tranny

th350,th400 or 700r4 can be easily installed in place of
the th200c if it is bad,the 700r4 will require parts from
an'83 up 700r4 f-bod to install.
if the 200c is good,it might hold up decent as some
have been reported to hold up to a lot of abuse

The th200c shares a lot of internal parts with the 4spd
th2004r that is used in turbo buicks among other cars.

Re: 82 trans am tranny

Sometimes the model numbers can be interchanged and it can be a little confusing.

If the car has a lock up converter it is actually a 200-4-R.

My 82 crossfire had a 2.93 or 2.94 ratio originally (been 21 years since I blew the original rear end and can't remember which anymore!), so it could be that or 3:23. There should be a tag on one of the bolts on the carrier cover that tells you the gear ratio.

The 200-4-R can be replaced with the 700R4 and give you a fourth gear and and also includes an overdrive if you do in fact have a lock up trans and would like to keep a lock up trans.

Re: 82 trans am tranny

Actually the 200 4r is the 4spd adaptation of the 3spd
th200c,the "c"is for lockup converter.
The 200 4r has a 1 piece case,so torque arm must be
mounted to crossmember in order to use in a third gen
(thought about doing this in mine years ago because
i liked the 200 4Rs 1-2 ratio spread better than the
700r4's )
200 4r has been used in a few chevys, but is much
more common behind an olds 307 in '81-90 GM cars.
th200c was made 1976-'84,was upgraded in '82 with
hardened splines in a drum inside-earlier ones with
the unhardened splines can have those splines
strip out-same thing with '81 200 4r,i found out the
hard way-at least the fix was cheap and easy

Re: 82 trans am tranny

Not trying to argue, but my completely bone stock 1982 T/A that I bought in 1986 had a 200-4-R. It was unmolested. Do not remember how the torque arm mounted.

Both my 1982 and 1983 Trans Am owner's manuals state the 200-4-R was available.
