I recently bought an 82 z-28 and it has a 4speed manual in it and I can not figure out what transmission this is. Reverse is left and down. I was told it was pulled out of a junkyard 3rd gen but i can not find any reference to this shift pattern on any transmission used on 3rd gen camaros. Any help would be great. I do not have the car at my place right now since it is sitting on jack stands at parents house but i can try to answer any questions you need to clear things up and i can do some addition inspections of the car this weekend when i go look at it.

 

everyone can guess for you or you can get under the car and take some pictures of it especially from the driverside and where the shifter bolts on.

 

i understand that but i was wondering if anyone knew of a factory transmission with that shift pattern. And i will take some pictures as best i can this weekend when i am at my parents house.

 

I really need some help with this cause my reverse lights dont work and i believe it is a problem with them not connected at the transmission. if anyone can help with figuring out my transmission or what is wrong with reverse lights that would be great

 

I believe stock was suppposed to be either a t10 or super t10, but maybe a saginaw? Someone on the forum is bound to know. let me see if I can look for patterns.

Is it shifting ok? I just remembered on alot of those 4 speeds you can put the shifter upside down and it still works. you just wouldnt have reverse lights because of the lack of contact.

Sounds like a Saginaw.

When you look at the trans, the reverse shifter arm will go into either the case, or the extension housing. If it goes into the inspection cover, it's a Saggy; if it goes into the ext hsg, it's a T-10.

I know it's tough, after all "ebay" has 4 letters you have to type in; but searching for stuff like that is actually pretty worthwhile. Especially since all those people selling stuff over there go to all kinds of trouble to make their pictures easy to identify stuff in. It's like the whole world is just going out and taking pictures of everything you ever wanted to know what it looks like and posting them right there for you to look at.

 

I thought it was a t10 or saginaw also but neither have the shift pattern mine has and as far as i know it shifts ok in top its 1 3 and bottom is R 2 4. And i found out why reverse lights dont work and its because they are not connected to the switch on the transmission but i still can not figure out which transmission it is. Saginaws i believe reverse is right and down and t10 have reverse left and up but i might have them switch but i know neither is left and down

 

duh duh duh any jackass could have put a piece of crap shifter on either tranny. So what you want to know is what shifter do you have?
look at the pics and match it up to what tranny you have or post a pic of what you have and someone will tell you what trans you have.

Duh duh duh what does changing the shifter out have to do with the shift pattern in the trans? What he is looking for is which factory trans has that shift pattern. Answer Saginaw.

subroc any trans can have that pattern depending on what shifter, rods,and mounting plate you install on it and how you setup the rods

 

Well i have an answer. It has a hurst shifter on it but i found out that i was given wrong info when i bought the car. They got the tranny out of a 77 truck and they think it is the saginaw. Sounds like another project to me when i get the time and money to drop a t56 into the car.

 

How many bolts is on the cover? Is the reverse shift lever on the cover?

Muncie has 7 bolts on the cover, the reverse shift lever is not on the cover.
Saginaw has 7 bolts on the cover, and the reverse shift lever on the cover.
Borg Warner has 9 bolts on the cover.
