700r4 in reverse but won't pull? Help please
700r4 in reverse but won't pull? Help please
Hoping I might get a little trans help from y'all.
Just Rebuilt my 700 and installed this week. Here is a brief description of the build:
Converter is stock stall. Replaced stock 2/4 servo with 'vette servo also vette governor. Installed Transgo SK 700-G green kit. Performed all mods as noted and set for medium duty. Also installed Superior hydraulic lock up valve kit. On disassembly I found no obvious issues, sun shell looked good as did the other normal problem points as indicated by the service manuals.
Here is the problems. Forward gears engage but very soft. It is shifting into 3-4 and lock up is good at about 50. But it feels a little labored on take off. I believe it is starting off in 2nd which would explain the sluggish pull off but am not certain of that. It is definitely is engaging reverse but will not pull, feels like it's bound up.
I feel forward clutches engaging in park and neutral, not hard but you can tell it's happening. There is a buzzing sound coming from the pump/converter area( it was loud when first started but not so much now) and a general whirr/whine from the trans in all gears including park and neutral. Pulling my hairs now! Can anyone help? I am going to pull the pan and see what up there tomorrow and probably pull the trans this weekend and tear it down again to see what I messed up. I'm wondering if the shift kit is causing these problems. That kit had me do some really weird things to the tranny when building it. But again I am a extreme novice at A/T rebuilding and learning on my own so if I seem not to be too sure or just plain stupid please forgive me!
Thanks for any input!

Maybe obvious question(s)....1) do you have the TV adjusted correctly and 2) assume your fluid level is ok (warm)?

Thanks for the reply!
Yes to both items. I have been through the cable adjustment with attention as I know a maladjustment will fry the trans quick! And fluid is right on the money....
I also was told to double check my governor for sticking but all is good there.
I'm hoping someone can give an idea of what else it might be.

Check the boost valve in the front pump. On a rebuild, it's easy to put the snap ring in the wrong groove (there are 2 grooves, one near the lip and one about an inch in, i did when i built it and had symptoms similar to yours. Pull the pan off, and near where the filter goes in see if the valve pushed out. The snap ring goes in the further back groove. I know my shift kit called for a new spring, your's might have as well.
This will cause reverse not to work for sure. Reverse gear requires a much higher pressure to operate, controlled by this.
