hard shifting 700r4

just picked up a 88 camaro with a tbi 350 the kick down cable is not hooked up the clip broke waiting on a new cable to come in but my symtoms are when putting it into drive it violently bangs into drive, then when driving it takes forever to go into second then just bangs in. havent really driven it just wondering what this might be and if its just because the kickdown cable is not connected.

Re: hard shifting 700r4

It is now in the factory "limp mode". Replace the TV cable asap, and do not drive it, unless necessary. Make sure that the new TV cable is tight at WOT.

Yes

The transmission "sees" that the TV cable is fully retracted, so it maxes the line pressure to cause late, hard shifts as a last resort to avoid more damaging soft, early shifts. The car isn't driveable in this condition, except in an emergency.
